How MTV EMA gave Wizkid a reality check

A lot of controversies have trailed the blunder by the MTV EMA 2016 organisers who initially awarded Wizkid the award for the Best Africa act, but took it back, giving it to Tanzania’s Ali Kiba.

As much as most people know the truth that Wizkid is a more continental sensation than Ali Kiba, Wizkid however, needed the reality check because like it or not, it was voting that counted and everyone knows most Nigerians don’t vote. Most likely,if it was someone like Falz, or Tekno, even Reekado Banks who was in the same position, they most likely would have gotten more support from fans.

The issue where a widely loved favourite Tekno, got trolled mercilessly for his normal sized “cassava”, on account of his song lyrics, shows that as much as people profess fan love for these artistes, they really don’t care much for their actual persons or feelings.

Yes, Wizkid proved his mettle with his collaborations and accolades this year, his MTV MAMA, AFRIMA, and other awards speak volumes of the hard and smart work he has been putting in his music, but this new development with the MTV EMA’s shows he still has a lot of work to do on his fan base.

Recall that he once had a minor issue with Ali Kiba at a concert in Kenya over who was going to close the show. Ali Kiba believed he is a bigger star in the country while Wizkid believed himself to be bigger. The fact that Ali Kiba won the upper hand showed that while Wizkid might be the bigger export, the true loyalty of the fans was not his at the time.

“Talent is not enough!”

With a star presence to rival that of the biggest international superstars, Wizkid is one artiste who is more than just the music and tunes. Sadly, it seems he is becoming farther and farther from his fans with the current work he is doing and might need to work harder on connecting with fans back home.

His upcoming concert in Lagos is a first step in the right direction and hopefully, this is one of many more homecomings we would see from the singer.

The MTV EMA’s showed that popularity and loyalty are two different things while the one might be the superstar, “last last, how many people believe you can epp them when it counts?”
